Membership Committee

Would you like to know more people in SMPS? Would you like them to know you? If so, then the Membership Committee is a great place to start.

What does the Membership Committee do?
Most people see the Membership Committee handing out nametags at the monthly luncheon event. However, there is work done before and after that isn't as obvious. The Seattle Membership Committee is involved with: notifying and helping prospects or members with their membership status (join, renew, reinstate, etc.); keeping the local database current; engaging the membership to find ways to help them achieve their goals; generating a prospect membership list; and creating, handing out, and filing nametags of event attendees. As you can see, there are many places where members can help keep this committee going.

How much time will this take a month?
The committee meets every first Thursday of the month from 4-6 pm. Both Amy and Jennifer admit that they "do it for the happy hour". The amount of time spent on the committee varies with the task that you're assigned. Most tasks that keep the membership running will take about an hour per month. There is also the monthly luncheon that committee members are encouraged to help with registration and meet other attendees of the event. So if you're going anyway, why not maximize meeting people?

Who's who?
Currently, the Membership Committee is made up of:
  • Director of Membership-Carol Micek, HWA GeoSciences Inc.
  • Committee Member-Kelly Chaffee, ESA Adolfson
  • Committee Member-Amy Matsumoto, Roth Hill Engineering Partners
  • Committee Member-Paige Nilsen, Sound Environmental Strategies
  • Committee Member-Jennifer O'Rear, Rafn Company
The reviews are in! What is the evaluation on the committee from the committee?
Carol can't say enough great things about her committee. They have worked hard so that she can create the "New Member Connections" this year. Each one of them has stepped up and exceeded her expectations. She is very excited about the 2007-08 year and the committee that is helping to pull it together.

Kelly has noticed that her exposure to firms that she doesn't deal with on a day-to-day basis has helped her to understand other players in the industry. She gets to meet new people and reinforce relationships she's built from work or SMPS. Since email is such a common communication technique, she really enjoys getting the chance to meet those people face-to-face.

Amy likes the committee because it's a really easy way to get to know people in the industry. She looks at the roster, makes nametags, sends emails, and attends the luncheons so that she sees names and faces often. Additionally, she finds that the organizing of membership information is similar to her organizing information at work; the two seem to go together.

Jennifer and Paige think that it is really nice to be involved because they are part of what is going on. They see a piece of the "behind the scenes" of SMPS Seattle and meet new people along the way.
