As we look around our offices there are people all around us who know our services, our strengths our methods – and they aren’t marketing. In most offices they are a tremendous untapped resource. Yet, in some firms there is a culture of proactive market spirit, where each person is invested and involved in the development of business activity.
* How does this evolve?
* What can you do to create this spirit in your office?
* Where do you start?
Join us as Randy Tuminello attempts to answer these questions and leads us in a discussion of Staff Alchemy: Turning Technical Staff into Marketers.

At times we may believe our peers, employees, and bosses are over-reliant on supervision yet unwilling to take the lead. We may have a tendency to emphasize fault when a mistake is made -- as long as it isn’t our fault. I’m not sure how we got here but there are training solutions to move us away from this non-productive and negative trend.
Presented by Marcus Mann, Director of Training & Employee Development at Lease Crutcher Lewis.
Marcus is a 23-year peace officer, FBI academy graduate and a college instructor. He is certified in behavioral profiling, investigative psychology and statement analysis. He recently completed his second book entitled Terror Risk Assessments: Profiles, Predictions & Prevention.

* understanding the differences between marketing and business development in professional service firms
* preparing for client introductions, and
* building successful working relationships.
Not just for “sales guys”, this program provides value for technical staff, principals, project managers and marketing personnel. Both the St. Louis and Arizona SMPS chapters recommend the workshop as “a hands-on environment to explore an unfamiliar dimension – the human connection of business development”.
Participants will leave the program with knowledge of lead development, developing relationships and creating projects for their firms, and the ability to build a network that provides both personal and professional value. Each participant receives a printed workbook that can be used for on-the-job reference.

Healthcare represents one of the largest markets for A/E/C firms as aging baby boomers challenge healthcare providers to offer the best and latest technologies, services, and amenities in their facilities. Beyond the boomer issues, are Puget Sound medical centers prepared for an avian flu pandemic or a regional disaster? Is our healthcare system able to handle the increasing number of patients who use the emergency department for primary care? The role of managing healthcare facilities is more demanding than ever.
Join SMPS Seattle as we explore these issues through a moderated panel discussion with representatives of Puget Sound healthcare facilities: their perspectives on these changes, how institutions are responding, and opportunities for A/E/C firms to collaborate with healthcare providers.

Ever find it challenging to manage the clash of Veterans, Boomers, Xers and Nexters? Do your Xer employees sometimes frustrate your Veteran clients? Does your Boomer management style ever conflict with your Xer staff? If you've faced conflicts in your office, part of the problem could be trying to blend today's multigenerational workforce. How are these generational types influencing our communities? What forces affect how community planners and other clients define our future?
Attend this presentation to discover the characteristics of these multigenerations and explore the most effective ways to communicate with them. Join us as we also examine generational influences that effect design and construction trends in markets such as higher education, healthcare, commercial and residential.
The chapter is also pleased to welcome Karen Courtney, AIA, FSMPS, to the June luncheon. Karen is our 2004-05 SMPS National President. Her brief presentation will include the latest news from national as well as insight into other chapters' activities.
The Economic Forecast for Washington State...What Do All Those Numbers Mean?

Place: Washington Athletic Club, 1325 Sixth Avenue, Seattle
Schedule: Networking/registration at 11:30 - Lunch served at 12:00 PM - Presentation begins at 12:30 PM
Join SMPS Seattle as we discuss the economic conditions in the Pacific Northwest with Richard Kaglic, Chief Economist for the Washington State Employment Security Department. With our state's jobless rate at the lowest since 2000, is our economy really on the rebound? Does it indicate sustained growth? What does this mean to our clients in the healthcare, commercial, hospitality, manufacturing and telecommunications markets? Not your stereotypical conservative economist, Mr. Kaglic's presentation is guaranteed to be practical for A/E/C firms as they develop strategic plans and evaluate current marketing strategies.
Before his recent move to Washington, Mr. Kaglic was senior business economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, where he coordinated efforts to gather and analyze economic data for the Seventh Federal Reserve District. He also was an economist with the Environmental Economics Division of the Bureau of Economic Analysis in Washington, D.C. He has a master's degree in economics from Youngstown State University in Ohio and enjoys life outside the office as an ultralight aircraft flight instructor.

Regional transportation issues are at the forefront of discussion and planning by our state and local leaders -- and they challenge us individually on a day-by-day basis. Congestion, which is currently estimated to cost the Puget Sound region $1.5 billion to $2 billion a year or 1 to 2 percent of the region's personal income, would consume more than 3.5 percent of personal income by 2030. Senator Ken Jacobsen noted that we have $50 billion in unmet transportation needs. Join SMPS Seattle for a spirited and interactive discussion about the political, economic and demographic influences on our transportation challenges and solutions.

Client Audit
Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2004
Presenters: Debbie DeGabrielle - DeGabrielle Marketing Consulting, Mary Figel - Figel Marketing Consulting, and Michelle Rosenberger - Marketing Manager GGLO
It may be one of the most important things you can do, both for your own career success as well as for your firm. Every new customer needs a reason to believe and buy from you-not your competitor. Over time you begin to lose your objectivity. You lose the "outside in" perspective that someone who is meeting your firm for the first time has. Are you sure you know what's important to a prospective customer? Are you sure you know how to articulate your message powerfully? Are you sure you are the best choice? Or are you just sure you need to win this job and applying more boilerplate seems like a good strategy?
Come hear how a client audit can change all that. Learn how to structure a customer audit, analyze the results and form a strategy to incorporate the learning.
Because one thing is absolutely clear…. Success is never accidental.
